The Probationary Officer post at the State Bank of India is one of the most wanted jobs among graduates. It offers a strong starting salary, quick growth into management, and the prestige of working with the country’s largest bank. It is also one of the toughest bank exams, so knowing exactly what it tests is the first step.
SBI PO 2026 at a Glance
The 2026 cycle has moved quickly. Here is a summary of the key details:
| Detail | Information |

If you missed the 2026 cycle, this is the best time to start preparing for the next one. SBI usually releases the PO notification in the middle of the year, which gives you about seven to eight months of preparation time if you begin now.
Eligibility
- Education: Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students can usually apply, provided they meet the deadline given in the notification.
- Age: 21 to 30 years, with relaxation for reserved categories as per government rules.
- Nationality: Indian citizen (and certain other categories as listed in the notification).
Selection Process
SBI PO selection happens in three phases:
- Preliminary Exam: a screening test. Marks are not counted in the final merit.
- Main Exam: an objective test plus a descriptive English test.
- Phase III: a psychometric test, a group exercise and an interview.
The final merit list is based on Mains and Phase III marks together.
Prelims Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
| English Language | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Each wrong answer costs one-fourth of the marks given for that question. Because every section has its own timer, you cannot borrow time from one section to use on another.
Mains Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
| Reasoning & Computer Aptitude | 40 | 60 | 50 minutes |
| Data Analysis & Interpretation | 30 | 60 | 45 minutes |
| General, Economy & Banking Awareness | 60 | 60 | 45 minutes |
| English Language | 40 | 20 | 40 minutes |
| Descriptive English | 2–3 tasks | 30 | 30 minutes |
The descriptive paper usually asks for an email or letter, a report, and a situation analysis or precis. Practise writing within a word limit.
Syllabus Highlights

Salary and Career Growth
A newly appointed SBI PO starts with a basic pay of ₹48,480 per month, which includes four advance increments. With dearness allowance, house rent or leased accommodation, and other benefits, the total package is much higher than the basic pay. POs typically move into Assistant Manager and Deputy Manager roles within a few years, depending on performance and internal exams.
A Seven-Month Preparation Plan
| Month | What to Do |
| 1–2 | Build basics in all three Prelims subjects; read a newspaper daily |
| 3 | Start sectional tests; learn short methods for calculation |
| 4 | Begin Mains-level puzzles and data interpretation |
| 5 | Two full Prelims mocks every week; start banking awareness notes |
| 6 | Alternate Prelims and Mains mocks; practise descriptive writing |
| 7 | Revise, analyse mocks, and fix weak topics |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending too long on one puzzle in Prelims. Learn to skip and return.
- Ignoring English because it “feels easy”. It carries 40 marks in Prelims.
- Reading current affairs without revision. Make short notes and revise them weekly.
- Taking mocks without analysing them. The analysis teaches you more than the test.
